If you are considering switching energy supplier, you could be in line for several benefits - from saving money to an improved service. The process does, however, require a few tasks which usually fall onto the lap of the customer themselves.

Aside from the basics, such as who your energy supplier actually is - which isn't always as obvious as it might seem - there are some other typical steps which you will need to take when it comes to changing energy supplier. One of these is to find out your MPAN and MPRN number, and in this blog, we will look at what they are, where you can find them, and what they mean.
What is an MPAN number?
MPAN is an acronym for meter point administration number. Watch out for other names which might be given to it, such as an S Number or an Electricity Supply Number. You should be careful to distinguish the MPAN number from your customer reference number, which is another set of digits that is typically useful when switching energy supplier.
What is an MPRN number?
MPRN is an acronym for meter point reference number. It is linked to your gas meter, and is unique. As with the MPRN number, be sure that you don't confuse it with your customer reference number.
Where do I find my MPAN number?
Your MPAN number can be seen on your electricity bills. Look out for a 21-digit number which is broken down into various segments. If you don't have a copy of a bill to hand, you can ring your supplier directly and ask them what your MPAN number is.
Where do I find my MPRN number?
As with the MPAN number, your MPRN number should be displayed on your gas bills. It is between six and ten digits, and is usually labelled ‘Meter Point Reference’. If you haven't got a copy of your bill, call your supplier, or 0870 608 1524 for the Meter Number Helpline.
Once you know exactly who your supplier is, and what your MPAN and MPRN numbers are, you will be best placed to identify better value energy contracts, and change your supplier.
